Competition is open to all nonprofessional music students who reside in and attend school in Maricopa County OR who are active members of a Phoenix Youth Symphony Orchestral Training Program. The music student must also be recommended by his/her private teacher. For further information contact Mrs. Lisa Blaine (480) 905-3047.
REQUIREMENTS
1. Each contestant shall be required to perform FROM MEMORY one movement of a standard concerto, or a composition for solo instrument and orchestra. Contestants in the Junior Division may select from the Junior Repertoire, or the Senior Repertoire on recommendation of his/her private teacher. The contestants in the Senior Division may select from the Senior Repertoire, or a solo with available orchestral accompaniment not on the list, approved by The Phoenix Symphony Orchestra. NOTE: To ensure availability, it is very important that the Competition Director be notified immediately if the solo selection chosen is not from the senior repertoire list. DO NOT CONTACT THE CONDUCTOR. Senior Contestants have an option to compete in the Scholarship Auditions.
2. No student shall perform a composition which he/she performed in any previous Phoenix Youth Symphony Young Musicians Competition. Any composition performed in a Phoenix Youth Symphony Young Musicians Competition may be selected by the same student for the Scholarship Auditions in subsequent years.
3. Each contestant must provide his/her own accompanist. An accompanist is required for the competition. If your accompanist can only play at certain times, we may not be able to accommodate your accompanist. You must notify us if there is a change of accompanist.
4. Maximum playing time will be ten minutes and must include the cadenza. Cuts may be necessary and this should be done at the discretion of the contestants’ teacher. Contestants will be stopped after 10 minutes and 30 seconds, without exception.
5. Piano contestants will be allowed to play one scale only on the competition piano prior to playing the composition selection. Practice rooms will be available before the contestant’s scheduled time to perform. Each contestant will be allowed 10 minutes in the practice room.
6. Three originals, or three copies of the solo to be performed must be provided by the contestant for judges’ use. The copies must not contain any marks identifying the contestant or teacher. The copies must have all measures numbered and any cuts clearly marked. All copies will be destroyed after the competition.

REQUIREMENTS PHOENIX YOUTH SYMPHONY GRAND PRIZE/CLOTILDE OTRANTO PRIZE/SCHOLARSHIP AUDITIONS JANUARY 11, 2009
PLACE: Music Building, ASU Campus TIME: Beginning at 1:00 p.m. REQUIREMENTS: 1. Submission of Grand Prize/Clotilde Otranto Prize/Scholarship Application Form. 2. An eligible winner (as described below) in the Senior Division Competition on January 10, 2009. 3. Two solos = one, the approved memorized concerto and the second, a contrasting solo. 4. Three copies of both solos with all measures and cuts marked. STRINGS, WOODWINDS,
BRASS & PIANO: The memorized concerto plus a
work demonstrating - (does not need to • a contrasting style, that is, fast and technical versus something slow and lyrical • a different period (Romantic or later if concerto is Baroque or Classical)
ELIGIBLE WINNERS: The number of eligible winners competing for prizes and scholarships will be based on the weighted average of the number of applicants in each category. Because there typically are significant differences in the number of competitors in some instrument categories, the number eligible will be adjusted to reflect those differences. Each eligible person will be offered one of 15 scholarships, and at least one person from each instrument category will be eligible for a scholarship. For example, if there is a total of 76 in the senior division concerto competition and 22 competing in one of the categories, then 22/76 x 15 = 4.34, so 4 in that category would be eligible to compete for prizes and scholarships. If there are 5 competing in another category, then 5/76 x 15 = 0.99, so 1 in that category would be eligible. Stated another way, the percentage of eligible competitors in an instrument category is the same as the percentage the number of players in that category is of the total number of competitors in all categories.
RESULTS: The Grand Prize Winner and the Clotilde Otranto Winner will be announced following the conclusion of the day’s competition. On February 8, 2009 they will solo with The Phoenix Symphony. Specific scholarship awards will be announced as soon as possible - hopefully, within a few days of the Scholarship Auditions.
PLEASE NOTE: Each contestant will have 15 minutes of playing time which includes the concerto, followed by the remaining selection. Selections written with accompaniment must be performed that way, and students must provide their own accompanist. You must notify us if there is a change of accompanist. According to P.Y.S. policy, no scholarship winner may attend a camp more than twice; no contestant can win the Grand Prize or the Clotilde Otranto Prize more than once; the Clotilde Otranto Prize Winner must be a current member of the Phoenix Youth Symphony Orchestral Training Program; the Grand Prize and the Clotilde Otranto Prize cannot be awarded to the same contestant in any given year.
Decision of judges is final.
