The String Orchestra

Membership Fee: $300

Conducted by: Doreen Press

PYS String Orchestra accepts talented upper elementary and junior high students who show through audition they are ready for more advanced rehearsal and performance orchestral skills. Members learn to play with sensitivity and ensemble balance. Individual preparation of music is required. Professional musicians are brought in periodically to coach sectionals. The PSG String Orchestra was selected to perform at the 1996 AMEA State Convention and has performed at the Phoenix Country Day School, the Phoenix Zoo, the Chandler Center for the Arts, the Festival of Trees at the Glendale Civic Center and in Washington D.C. The String Orchestra toured and performed in Chicago in March, 2007.
Originally from Chicago, Doreen Press received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from Northwestern University and her Master of Arts in Educational Counseling from the University of Phoenix. A music educator for 30 years, Mrs. Press is currently the Director of Orchestras at Westwood High School in Mesa. She participates as an adjudicator, clinician and guest conductor at district, regional and state music festivals, including North Central Regional Orchestra, Greater Phoenix Honor Orchestra, and Elementary All State Orchestra. She has authored five articles on music education published in Teaching Music, a national journal for music educators. Mrs. Press is honored to be included in the 2004, 2005 and 2006 editions of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and has been recognized as a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction, as well as a National Honor Roll’s Outstanding American Teacher.

Mrs. Press is in her 12th season with the String Orchestra. She believes that young musicians need a place to be with other musicians like themselves. She creates an environment that encourages self-expression as well as group performance.
